In-process 5x7” landscapes prior to top-stitching, 2021

I accept commission requests on a limited basis (approximately four works per year), depending on current wait list availability. I would be glad to hear from you with your interest and answer any questions about the process before we decide whether we want to move forward together with a commission. Please reach out via this Contact Form (if you haven’t already) and allow 72 hours for a reply (although I typically answer sooner than this).

Sizes and Pricing
Standard sizes and starting prices are listed below. Pricing varies and is based on size, design, complexity, and framing. I would be glad to hear from you and explore whether I can create a piece based on your budget and preferences. Sales tax of 6.25% will be added to all sales within the state of Massachusetts. International orders may be subject to additional customs fees and taxes for which the client is responsible.

Standard Size Options (in Inches) for Framed Custom Artwork

12x16” begins at $580 (solid cherry wood frame included)

16x20” begins at $980 (frame not included)

20x20” begins at $1400 (frame not included)

Maximum dimensions for custom artwork (at this time): 36x40”

Wait list and Turn-Around Time
Production of custom work typically takes 12-16 weeks. The timeline may be longer if I have a wait list of commissions at the time of your inquiry, or if you are commissioning a larger work. If you inquire at a time when there are several commissions ahead of you in the queue, the wait time could be up to a year. Expedited production and delivery may be accommodated for an additional fee.

Custom Design Process

The process below allows for the client and artist to be on the same page about expectations of the proposed work before moving forward. Please read this section carefully to ensure you understand where there is opportunity for input, as well as the specific constraints in the design process.

1)    Information Gathering. The client will be asked to complete a questionnaire with information about the desired custom design, including color palette, composition, specific design features, complexity, size, framing, and overall feel of the piece.

2)    Design Proposal. I will provide an outline of the proposed work including approximate size, a photo of the color palette (fabric swatches), and information about framing and shipping options (if applicable). (I do not provide sketches or mock-ups of an exact composition for commissioned artworks, because my construction process is improvisational.)

3)    Client Feedback. The client will have an opportunity to give feedback on the proposal (e.g. to adjust color palette and other overall design features) to ensure the plan reflects their vision for the commissioned piece. Three back-and-forth communications about the proposed custom design are included in the cost of commissioned work. Additional design iterations beyond this may increase the final price of the artwork.

4)    Confirmation and Deposit. The client and I will then decide whether to move forward with the proposed commission. If so, I will offer a revised summary incorporating feedback from the design process, along with an invoice. To move forward, the client will confirm via e-mail and submit a 50% deposit for work to begin on the piece. (See Payment section for more details.)

How Technique Constrains Design
I create abstracted patchwork landscapes using improvisational curved sewing techniques. I do not work directly from client images or recreate specific scenes from reality. However, images can serve a valuable role in shaping shared understanding between the artist and client in a commission request, and I sometimes use photos as inspiration while creating a work. As part of the commission process, you are welcome to send me photos of places that inspire you. Please note that any commissioned work will not be a direct representation of a specific photo or location, but an artistic interpretation that may vary considerably in composition, color, texture, and perspective due the inherent technical and stylistic constraints in my art-making process. I generally do not depict buildings, people, animals, or other detailed features of landscapes in my work.  If you are seeking art in this style, you may consider searching for other contemporary textile artist members of Studio Art Quilt Associates.

While I use quilting techniques, I generally construct “raw-edge” pieces, meaning the work is not finished or bound on the edges with a strip of fabric as most functional quilts or quilted wall hangings. Completed works are intended for display in a frame.

Payment
Once the plan is approved by the client (via email sign off, Step 4 above), a non-refundable 50% deposit will be required before any work begins on the custom piece. The final 50% balance is due prior to shipment. I accept personal checks, Paypal, and credit cards (processed securely via my website shop).

Shipping
The client is responsible for any applicable shipping fees and taxes. Shipping costs can be included as an estimate in the initial quote, but may vary depending on the framing materials selected and type of shipping service selected by the client. International commissions and shipping are possible, but may incur additional processing, taxes, and customs fees, depending on your location. Local pickup is available for clients in the Boston area. Local delivery is available for an additional fee.

Framing
All framed works will be professionally prepared using museum-grade matting in a neutral color to be selected by the client, UV-filtering glass or plexiglass (depending on size and preference), a solid wood frame, a hanging wire, and sealed back to keep out dust. UV Plexiglass is recommended for works that will be shipped to the client to prevent breakage. Works are typically prepared and shipped as framed pieces, however if you prefer to commission an unframed work, please discuss with the artist early in the process.

Return Policy
Custom artworks cannot be returned. All sales are final. The 50% deposit (due after we both decide to move forward with the commission) is non-refundable.

In the unlikely event that your item is damaged during shipping, please contact me within two days of arrival to discuss a solution.

FAQs

Do you ship internationally?
Yes. Please include your location when you contact me, and we can discuss shipping options. Customers are responsible for paying all shipping fees, as well as any local customs and taxes on their country’s end.

Do you make full-sized bed quilts on commission?
At this time, my commissions are limited to a maximum dimension of 40” framable art quilts. I reserve my “free sewing” time to make bed quilts as gifts for loved ones and I am not able to offer commissioned bed quilts at this time.

Do you sell patterns of your designs?
At this time, I do not offer patterns or written tutorials. The process I use is improvisational. I encourage you to explore learning about curve piecing and try making a simple, small design to start. If you make something inspired by my work, please tag me on Instagram (@annie.cardinaux.artist). If you are interested in collaborating on a pattern or book, please contact me via the contact form.

Do you offer instruction in your improvised landscape sewing techniques?
I am available to give virtual presentations to quilt guilds and other groups worldwide. Please reach out via my contact form to discuss rates and scope.
